Shenzhen Mayor sacked for “grave disciplinary offences”

Xu Zongheng was formally removed from his position as mayor of Shenzhen, one of China's largest and wealthiest cities, after he was linked to serious disciplinary violations, the Guangdong-based Guangzhou Daily reported Tuesday.

Xu was also expelled from the 11th Guangdong Provincial People's Congress, where he was previously a representative, the Congress' standing committee said yesterday.

After the 53-year-old Xu was placed under investigation for corruption in June, Wang Rong, the former party chief of East China's Suzhou city, was tapped to serve as acting mayor.
