Shanghai to invest US$2.41b in power infrastructure

Shanghai Municipality will spend a record 20 billion yuan (US$2.41 billion) in building and upgrading power infrastructure this year.

The city would see the completion and operation of 82 power transmission projects, which would add 10.7 million kVA to the city's total power capacity this year, said Shuai Junqing, general manager of Shanghai Municipal Power Corporation.

Shuai said the maximum electricity consumption in Shanghai this summer would be equivalent to 16.7 million kW, a shortage of 4.04 million kW, according to Shanghai's actual power generation capacity.

However, Shuai pledged that with the support of the municipal government, the corporation would work harder to ensure a normal power supply in the city by transmitting more electricity into Shanghai from other parts of the country via cooperating closely with the State Power Grid and East China Power Grid.

The Three Gorges Project would see its installed capacity rise to 7 million kW with the operation of four new generators this year and would be able to generate 33.38 billion kWh of electricity annually.

The project, on the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, would generate 17 billion kWh of electricity for the East China Power Grid, of which, 7 billion kWh would be diverted to support Shanghai, said Shuai.
