Architectural style of temples on Mount Wutai

Updated : 2014-10-17

Since the Yellow temples (for monks) on Mount Wutai evolved from the Qing temples (Tibetan Buddhism monasteries), both feature an ethnic Han style with Tibet-inspired interiors. One example is Cifu Temple's Manjusri (a Bodhisattva in Mahayana Buddhism) Hall, where there are three large sculptures featuring Manjusri riding a lion in the middle, the Great Goddess of Mercy roaring to the sky on the left, and Samantabhadra riding a white elephant on the right. The two Kagyu (a school of Tibetan Buddhism) figures on the left side and Padma Sambhava (a literary character of Terma, an emanation of Amitabha that is said to appear to tertons during visionary encounters) and Manjusri figures on the right side reflect Tibetan religious elements.

Mount Wutai is home to many Buddhist pagodas and tomb towers. The Tibetan style pagodas are spread across the mountain, and Dabai Temple is a model of lama-styled brick towers in China. There are also many figures in the Tibetan Buddhist style at Buddhist temples at Mount Wutai.
