"We don't reckon it (military intervention) a decision that would be appropriate," because "the problem of (Libya's) internal security is a matter to be discussed at the UN Security Council," Sarkozy told a press conference after a meeting with his visiting South African counterpart Jacob Zuma.

"Of course we remain attentive to the decisions to be taken by the Security Council," he said.

When asked about his decision to dispatch French helicopter carrier Mistral to Libya coast, Sarkozy described it as an "humanitarian operation" to "evacuate foreign nationals found in Libya, whose origin countries could not afford to do" the evacuation.

Previously, French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe had said on Monday that military action in Libya would be "unproductive extremeness."
