The American team became the biggest winner at the 8th World University Archery Championship, which ended Sunday in the city of Shenzhen, which will host the 26th Summer Universiade next August.

It won gold medals in the Compound Men's Individual, Compound Mixed Team, Compound Women's Team and Compound Men's Team events during the four-day competition, a test event for the 2011 Universiade.

Among the US athletes, Adam Gallant won three gold medals in the Compound Men's Individual, Compound Mixed Team and Compound Men's Team.

"It was the best result I've ever had in an international competition. I really hope that I can come to the Universiade next year and take more gold medals home," he said.

The other three gold medals in the Recurve Mixed Team, Recurve Women's Team and Recurve Men's Team events were taken by Italy, South Korea and Japan.

The competition attracted about 190 archers and officials from 26 countries and regions.

"I am very glad to win the championships, and I will practice more in the coming year to gain more medals at the Universiade next year," said South Korean archer Jo Eun-ae, winner of the Recurve Women's Team and also winner of the Recurve Women's Individual.

Most of the competitors were in China for the first time. "Everything in the competition was very good and we've had great help from the staff and volunteers. We hope that we can come to this beautiful city again next year," said American student Erika Anschutz, gold medalist in the Compound Mixed Team and Compound Women's Team.

The athletes will have a one-day tour around Shenzhen before leaving for their home countries.
