Cancer expert and researcher Li Jingquan has been expelled from the Communist Party of China and removed from his public position after serious violations of discipline and law, the Hainan Commission for Discipline Inspection announced on Monday.

Li, who served as director of First Affiliated Hospital of Hainan Medical University, was found to have abused his authority for personal gain. This included banquets that could compromise the fair execution of official duties, receiving gifts and cash in violation of regulations, intervening in equipment procurement and benefiting personally from engineering projects.

He has a strong academic background, earning his PhD in oncology from Peking Union Medical College. He conducted postdoctoral research at the People's Liberation Army General Hospital and was a doctoral supervisor. He also held the title of chief physician.

Before his dismissal, Li held various prestigious positions in the medical field and led multiple national and provincial research projects, including innovation in tropical medicine innovation, clinical research on malignant tumors and studies on cancer vaccines. He was recognized in particular for his contributions to personalized cancer treatment strategies and was a respected member of the tumor vaccine committee of the China Anti-Cancer Association.

Hainan Medical University's official website issued a notice in January regarding an economic responsibility audit of Li. He was placed under investigation in April.
